How to Leverage Your IHG Credit Card for FREE Hilton Diamond Status
Having elite status with a hotel can be the difference between an upgrade to a city view or a view of an alley. Free breakfast or $34 a person. Late checkout or scrambling to get out of your room on time.
Basically, hotel status isn’t really necessary but boy does it make life so much better when traveling!
Recently, all of the travel blogs have been buzzing about Hyatt’s decision to offer status matching. Shortly afterwards, Hilton decided to jump on the bandwagon too.
What is Status Matching?
A hotel (or airline) will offer you elite status in their program based off elite status you have with another hotel (or airline). For example, if you have top status with SPG (Starwood Hotels) then Hyatt will offer you top status with their hotel program.
Why Would Hotels Do This?
They want to charm your socks off in hopes that you will become loyal to their hotel brand over another.
What is Hilton Diamond Status?
Hilton Diamond Status is pretty great!
You earn 50% extra points on all paid stays, free premium internet access, late check-out, two free bottles of water at most hotels, free breakfast or bonus points, free upgrades, and lounge access when available.
How to Participate in Status Match?
Simply e-mail HHonorMyStatus@hilton.com with a copy of your elite membership card with another hotel group (or screenshot showing your elite level status) and your Hilton HHonors number. No need to make this e-mail fancy, I just simply e-mailed them saying I wanted to participate in the status match, gave my Hilton HHonors number, and a screen shot of my elite status with IHG. Boom, done!
I received my response from Hilton within 20 minutes of e-mailing them confirming my diamond status.
I will have diamond status with Hilton until March 2017!!
What if You Don’t Have Elite Status with Another Hotel?
Not a problem!
Remember my last post about my favorite hotel credit card — the IHG credit card? Well, the IHG credit card gives you platinum status for FREE just for having the card (no hoops to jump through!).
I sent in a screen shot showing my platinum status with IHG to Hilton which worked for the status match. Even though IHG recently introduced a level higher than platinum (now the highest level with IHG is called Spire), Hilton still gave me top status (i.e. Diamond).
So basically, if you have platinum status with IHG, Hilton will upgrade you to diamond status!
You have until January 11, 2016 to e-mail Hilton for the status match. Diamond status will be valid until March 2017.
We are going to be staying at a Hilton resort in Fiji this summer and I’m hoping for an upgrade. I think my Diamond status will definitely help.
Plus, I’ll be traveling for work and the extra 50% bonus points on my paid stays will help me get closer to my next award stay (I’m thinking Croatia or Australia!!).
Elite status isn’t make or break but it’s so nice to have. When we were in Hawaii last month, our elite status gave us access to the spa so we could shower off after checking out of our room and before taking a red-eye flight home. We also got free breakfast which saved us $20 a day!
And this way, you’ll have elite status with two different hotel programs!
Let me know if you participate in the status match.
